Standiford Veterinary Center is an extraordinary general practice providing a great learning environment for our future veterinary technicians and nurses! Veterinary Technology externship students will receive hands-on training working with small animals. Students will gain experience in understanding the veterinary client patient relationship (VCPR) while working closely with skilled senior level veterinarian and technician leadership.

Standiford Veterinary Center is delighted to host veterinary students for externships!  This valuable clinical experience will let you take what you’ve learned in the classroom and put it to the test in an animal hospital of your choice.  Our hands-on externships are designed exclusively for veterinary students at AVMA-accredited veterinary schools in their clinical years, typically meaning their 3rd or 4th year of vet school.  Since every student has different interests, we are excited to offer these programs at a wide variety of our amazing partner hospitals.  We know that travel and lodging expenses for externships can often be cost-prohibitive on a student’s budget.  To make our externships as accessible as possible, we offer stipends to externs to help offset these costs (unless prohibited by the veterinary school you are attending).

Standiford Veterinary Center is offering 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-week externships to help jump-start your experience in a busy small animal practice. This is an excellent opportunity for any student looking for hands-on experience in a high-quality hybrid/GP and ER practice in a learning environment meant to jump-start their career as successful practice-ready doctors.

Students will receive a study guide based on the length of their externships and some recommended reading will be asked of the students. A minimum 40-hour-a-week commitment is expected.

Our externship program requires students to be enrolled in their second year or equivalent of an accredited veterinary technician program and must commit to no less than 200 externship hours. Candidates applying to the externship must submit a resumé, have strong communication skills, be able to work well with staff and be at least 18 years of age upon acceptance into the externship.

<p dir="auto">All anticancer drugs have the potential to cause side effects. Since the doses used in animals are less than the doses used in people, the side effects that can occur in pets are usually not as severe as those seen in humans. The main goal in the treatment of cancer in dogs and cats is to preserve a good quality of life and to avoid significant toxicity from chemotherapy. The most common side effects of chemotherapy are immune suppression and gastrointestinal upset. Dogs with non-shedding hair (i.e., Poodles) may experience hair loss, and cats may develop blunted whiskers. Dogs that shed do not usually experience noticeable hair loss. Immune suppression primarily manifests as low neutrophils (“neutropenia”), which are a type of white blood cell important to the immune system. Platelets, which are important to clotting, can also decrease with chemotherapy. Low neutrophils and platelets are noticed on routine bloodwork (“complete blood count”), but do not usually make animals feel sick. Bloodwork (complete blood count, or CBC) is repeated 7-10 days after most chemotherapy doses. A course of antibiotics may be prescribed to protect the immune system if neutrophil counts are below a certain value. Subsequent chemotherapy may also be delayed and dose- reduced.</p><p dir="auto">Although rare, about 5% of animals may experience severe immune suppression and become sick, and may develop a fever. This usually occurs 5-7 days following chemotherapy (although it can be closer to 10-14 days with some chemotherapy types). Hospitalization for IV fluids and antibiotics is necessary for animals who feel sick. When hospitalized and treated appropriately, animals generally make a full recovery within a few days.</p><p dir="auto">GI upset may manifest as inappetence, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, and generally occurs 3-5 days after chemotherapy.
